However, one routine I try not to step out of is eating healthy. I don't know about you, but my body behaves badly when its routine is disrupted - I don't want to spend my whole vacation popping antacids or worrying about fitting into my swim suit!
Of course, I believe it's important to splurge every once in a while - you have to try the local cuisine, eat whatever special dish your great-aunt prepares for you, no matter how much butter is in there, and what's a vacation without an ice cream cone?
We recently returned from a road trip that took us from Texas to Wisconsin and back... hours and hours spent on the road, grabbing lunch or dinner somewhere quick near the freeway (road trips are a timed event for my husband!) Quick and healthy don't typically go hand-in-hand, but even at the quickest spots, there's usually something that's not fried and includes more vegetables than just lettuce and tomatoes.
I also bring along healthy snacks in the car to ward off chocolate binges at gas station stores along the way, things that travel well, like raw almonds or walnuts, or grapes stashed in the cooler along with bottles of water and other drinks to keep us hydrated... very important when you're traveling! Crystal Light's "Drink Mix On the Go" packets come in handy on road trips like this - they're easy to store and easy to add to a bottle of water when you need something with flavor! (Despite his eye on the clock, my husband will reluctantly let us stop every couple of hours for a stretch-and-potty break.)
So how do you eat healthy when you're on vacation or just away from home? Give me some new ideas! Tell me in the comments section below for your chance to win the $100 VISA gift card.

I keep a food diary when I travel to keep track of calories consumed. I try to drink water instead of soda whenever possible.

I add some extra walking and/or swimming to my day and watch portion size.

Bring along snacks in those little tiny ziplock bags.
ReplyDeleteGoing on vacation can be exhausting, but as a family, we try to eat a good, healthy breakfast every morning before we start our day, a light lunch no later than 1pm, and a healthy dinner by 6pm, that way we have energy for our day of fun together and don't feel stuffed when our heads hit the pillow. We also try to make healthy choices with every meal. That can be difficult when we have to eat out every meal, but we have discovered that restaurants are becoming more health conscious and offer more healthy choices - fruits and vegetables, and leafy greens. This is how we try to eat healthy, stay well, and enjoy our vacation together as a family!!

I also bring along a cooler full of reasonably healthy snacks and cold drinks AND I try to get a hotel room with a refrigerator so we can have easy choices right there and not eat out every meal which can be unhealthy and expensive!

Great tips and ideas! Thanks for sharing...
ReplyDeleteIf you have an iphone there is a great and FREE application called LOSE IT! After setting up your profile, it will tell you how many calories you are allowed per day. You then have to enter all of the foods and drink that you have and it adds the calories up for you! It's super simple and easy and it helps you keep within your calorie intake so that you don't over eat...The trick is...ENTERING EVERYTHING YOU PUT IN YOUR MOUTH! It even lists fast food and restaurants for those times you eat out or are on the road during vacations!!!
ReplyDeleteMy wife and I are full-time RVers so we are basically on vacation always. I know, poor us!! We always travel with snacks so we can avoid the cost and unhealthy eating that comes with being on the road. Peanut butter and jelly works well for lunch (funny I never had them when I was a kid)and grapes are always a favorite. High fiber cookies and crackers are a must and lots of hiking to work off the caleries. It's amazing how different water tastes from place to place - often hard to gag down without it being really cold. It's helpful to have a safe additive to make it taste better.

ReplyDeleteSorry I can't add any good tips...I've been just throwing it all to the wind on my vacation. But thanks for all the great tips and the encouragement that trying not to ruin your health doesn't have to ruin your vacation!
ReplyDeleteVacation - People always use that word as an excuse to eat whatever they want while they are away from home. Then reality hits when they get back home they feel tired, clothes don't fit. So make good choices whether at home or on vacation.
ReplyDeleteJust remember this!

While on vacation I make sure I always have a water bottle. I get a refrigerator in the hotel room and put fruit and salads in it.
